Generics and Biosimilars:
Overview of 2008, Outlook for 2009 and Beyond

The effects of a deepening recession on consumers will continue to boost demand for cheaper pharmaceuticals. While generics players should benefit from the increase in demand, pricing and reimbursement pressures are likely to undermine the positive effect of increased sales volume on generics companies' bottom line, leaving them more exposed to takeover attempts. The general outlook for the generics industry is positive for 2009. The risks beyond 2012 would increase, however, as fewer patent expiries are on the horizon and none but the largest generics players find the ability to compete in the biosimilars market place.

IHS Global Insight's report, Generics and Biosimilars: Overview of 2008, Outlook for 2009 and Beyond, includes a complete global overview of the generics and biosimilars industries. The report examines recurring industry trends—as well as some extraordinary developments—in 2008 and provides an outlook for the industry for 2009 and beyond.

The report addresses the following key questions:
  • How did industry consolidation intensify in 2008 and what is the M&A outlook?
  • What were the main market-entry opportunities for generics in 2008 and who missed out on the 180-day exclusivity in the United States?
  • What does the FDA's latest interpretation of the 180-day exclusivity forfeiture criteria mean for generics manufacturers?
  • How was a generic version of Plavix allowed in the German market before the expiry of data exclusivity and what does this signify for the pharma industry going forward?
  • How did pricing and reimbursement events boost generics usage in 2008, and which country bucked the global pro-generic cost-containment trend?
  • Are we on the brink of biosimilars' approval regulations in major markets?
  • What is the general outlook for companies engaged in production of generics or biosimilars in 2009 and beyond?
