The State of Freight Transportation
15 Oct 08
California leads the nation in outbound tons of freight.
The latest release of the Global Insight TRANSEARCH® database from Global Insight's Trade and Transportation group revealed details of patterns of U.S. freight commodities, modes of transport, and geographic origins and destinations for 2007. California is the single largest state in terms of total outbound tons. Following California in outbound tons for the year are Texas, Illinois, Wyoming, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Florida, Ohio, New York, and Georgia. If viewed for manufactured freight only, Wyoming—rich in coal and other mineral shipments—drops to 34th place, and is replaced in the top 10 by the State of Washington with its import container trade. For inbound shipments by truck, rail, air, and domestic water, the same states make the top-10 list, again led by California and Texas with their large population/consumption centers. Pipeline movement of bulk materials such as crude oil, coal slurry, and natural gas are not included in TRANSEARCH®. The database does include international imports/exports, but only the U.S. portion of those movements. Of metro areas, Casper, Wyoming, and Saint Louis, Missouri, are among the top-10 originators of freight, along with Lexington, Kentucky; Chicago, Illinois; Charleston, West Virginia; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Duluth, Minnesota; Houston, Texas; Billings, Montana; and Los Angeles, California. For air cargo volume, Memphis, Tennessee, leads the way, followed by Louisville, Kentucky. Shipments by truck in 2007 outweighed those via rail, at 9.8 billion and 2.0 billion tons, respectively, according to TRANSEARCH®. Inland and inter-coastal water freight movements amounted to nearly 900.0 million tons, while air cargo totaled 8.5 million. Leading commodities, including all modes, are non-metallic minerals, coal, farm products, petroleum, food products, and chemicals. TRANSEARCH® forecasts of future freight activity (originated tons) to 2030 indicate annual average growth rates between 1.25% and 2.25% for all states except California, which again leads the pack at 2.65%. Texas, Louisiana, Wyoming, and the combined states in the West North Central, East South Central, Mountain, and Pacific regions show an annual growth rate between 1.75% and 2.00%. Slightly slower growth rates of 1.25% to 1.50% appear for Illinois and the New England, West South Central, South Atlantic, East North Central, and Middle Atlantic regions. 2007 Freight Tons Originated | Rank | Name | Total | | Rank | Name | Total | 1 | California | 1,277,011,830 | | 26 | Kansas | 184,357,940 | 2 | Texas | 1,005,867,606 | | 27 | South Carolina | 167,873,079 | 3 | Illinois | 732,867,905 | | 28 | Colorado | 165,053,204 | 4 | Wyoming | 539,855,111 | | 29 | Arkansas | 162,418,330 | 5 | Louisiana | 531,420,248 | | 30 | Maryland | 160,518,704 | 6 | Pennsylvania | 507,667,025 | | 31 | Arizona | 156,965,183 | 7 | Florida | 501,300,687 | | 32 | Mississippi | 140,087,843 | 8 | Ohio | 497,608,531 | | 33 | Oklahoma | 131,865,657 | 9 | New York | 493,480,233 | | 34 | Utah | 110,984,348 | 10 | Georgia | 387,564,403 | | 35 | Massachusetts | 108,207,030 | 11 | Washington | 351,570,844 | | 36 | Nebraska | 97,364,407 | 12 | Kentucky | 346,300,768 | | 37 | Montana | 93,083,658 | 13 | Indiana | 334,273,349 | | 38 | Idaho | 91,098,206 | 14 | Minnesota | 306,019,826 | | 39 | North Dakota | 81,173,430 | 15 | Virginia | 289,517,097 | | 40 | Nevada | 71,305,571 | 16 | New Jersey | 282,704,741 | | 41 | South Dakota | 70,373,837 | 17 | Alabama | 279,365,017 | | 42 | New Mexico | 66,038,777 | 18 | Michigan | 268,522,420 | | 43 | Delaware | 54,728,482 | 19 | Missouri | 263,834,449 | | 44 | Maine | 52,871,382 | 20 | North Carolina | 257,189,142 | | 45 | Connecticut | 52,000,200 | 21 | Wisconsin | 244,108,960 | | 46 | Alaska | 44,818,019 | 22 | West Virginia | 243,564,983 | | 47 | New Hampshire | 40,240,150 | 23 | Iowa | 235,564,874 | | 48 | Hawaii | 38,034,041 | 24 | Tennessee | 223,806,337 | | 49 | Vermont | 12,639,328 | 25 | Oregon | 185,351,352 | | 50 | Rhode Island | 9,795,437 | | | Source: Global Insight's Transearch 2007. | by Peter Stone
