Measuring Wal-Mart's Impact on the US Economy
Global Insight seeks research papers on economic impacts of America's largest retailer

Waltham, MA, August 29, 2005 – Global Insight, the private company that brought together DRI and WEFA, the world's most respected economic analysis, forecasting and financial information companies, has announced it is seeking independent research papers discussing the impacts of America's largest retailer, Wal-Mart, on the US economy. In early July, Global Insight initiated a call for papers by contacting economists, academics and business professionals for papers due by September 15, 2005 and is continuing to seek and accept submissions.

These papers, which will be screened by an independent Global Insight Review Committee, should cover the overall economic impact of Wal-Mart or focus on specific areas, such as inflation, jobs, and income growth. The papers should be related only to the US-based retailing operations of Wal-Mart, including the international impacts of these operations on areas such as trade, foreign labor and international suppliers, but will not deal with the company's foreign operations. Papers are desired that objectively analyze and quantify the impacts of Wal-Mart, whether favorable or unfavorable, on the U.S. economy.

The independent Committee will be formed from experts within Global Insight to review papers for presentation at the conference --"Economic Impact Research Conference: An In-depth Look at Wal-Mart and Society" -- on November 4, 2005. The conference will be sponsored by Wal-Mart. Papers for presentation will be selected according to relevance of Wal-Mart's economic impact - both positive and negative – and academic rigor, methodology, and overall quality of analysis. Global Insight will publish a volume of those papers that are selected for the conference and whose authors have given permission. Global Insight is undertaking its own independent study for presentation at the conference.

"Regardless of the findings - either positive or negative - we are encouraging the submission of papers that are rigorous in their scholarship, clear in their presentation and forthright in their conclusions," said Glenn MacDonnell, managing director, marketing and operations for Global Insight's Advisory Services.

Additional details about the submission process for papers are available from Global Insight's Web site at www.globalinsight.com/walmart or contact Glenn MacDonnell at glenn.macdonnell@globalinsight.com. Conference details are available from Wal-Mart by contacting Nate Hurst of Wal-Mart at 479.273.4314.
