Is Mobility As We Know It Sustainable?

Economic growth, quality of life, and mobility are inextricably intertwined in virtually every culture in the world. Only 1/5 of the world's population currently lives in an "industrial nation", yet these nations are responsible for some 60% of the demand for transport energy as well as the associated environmental challenges. What then will happen by 2035 with almost universally higher standards of living?

We are already seeing some "weak signals" that suggest a need for profound change:
  • Energy costs are skyrocketing, with economists quite challenged to forecast long-term future prices.
  • Diesel engines—the most efficient automotive engine—are coming under attack for undesirable side effects resulting from their use.
  • Cities are moving to discourage the use of personal motor vehicles, offering preferential treatment for "green" vehicles and other solutions that mitigate congestion, fuel use, and local pollution.
  • Weather patterns appear more severe, lending popular credence to climate change theories and building awareness of the need for change among a growing segment of the global population.

Purely technical solutions are unlikely to be sufficient. It is conceivable that policy makers will focus increasingly on not only what vehicles we drive, but on how often, where, and when. Indeed, the fundamental definition of mobility may be redefined. Global Insight's white paper, "Is Mobility As We Know It Sustainable?", explores the extent to which known transport technologies can reduce energy demand and greenhouse gas emissions, and identifies opportunities for actions that should be taken to mitigate the impact of the huge growth of the fleet by 2035.
