Is Mobility As We Know It Sustainable?

• Energy costs are skyrocketing, with economists quite challenged to forecast long-term future prices.
• Diesel engines—the most efficient automotive engine—are coming under attack for undesirable side effects resulting from their use.
• Cities are moving to discourage the use of personal motor vehicles, offering preferential treatment for "green" vehicles and other solutions that mitigate congestion, fuel use, and local pollution.
• Weather patterns appear more severe, lending popular credence to climate change theories and building awareness of the need for change among a growing segment of the global population.

Purely technical solutions are unlikely to be sufficient. It is conceivable that policy makers will focus increasingly on not only what vehicles we drive, but on how often, where, and when. Indeed, the fundamental definition of mobility may be redefined.
